Materials, technologies and systems for safe, efficient and eco-friendly processes

Fraunhofer IKTS provides materials, technologies and systems to make converting materials and energies efficient, environmentally compatible and climate-friendly. The focus is on processes in the field of conventional and bioenergies, strategies and methods for keeping the soil, water and air clean and for recovering valuable raw materials from residual waste materials. Many approaches aim for closed material cycles.

Spotlight Topic: Membrane plants and membrane engineering

Ceramic and inorganic membranes offer distinguished properties for solving challenging separation tasks in liquid, vaporous and gaseous media. Examples are gas separation tasks at elevated pressures and temperatures, organic solvent nanofiltration tasks breaking azeotropic mixtures with hydrophilic membranes.

For membrane characterization and membrane process engineering a variety of membrane test plants is available at Fraunhofer IKTS. With these plants and the expertise of scientists and experts ceramic and inorganic membranes are characterized, suitable membranes selected and membrane processes developed. Area of activity reaches from feasibility tests, over long-term stability tests up to the development of the basic process layout.

IKTS also offers pilot membrane system development based on client specific requirements, membranes and of various degree of automation. Based on process and membrane requirements membrane test systems and membrane pilot systems are developed, designed, and practically implemented for the relevant application.
