Usage and Application of Energy Data

The combination of ICT methods and procedures leads to improved and innovative applications. The Fraunhofer Energy Alliance also deals with the effects of flexible, fluctuating tariffs on electricity suppliers and their energy procurement strategies. Experts at Fraunhofer develop solutions for a comprehensive energy data management. Demand-side management systems play an important role in this context, as the energy consumption in these systems is controlled intelligently. Demand-response systems, in the form of Smart Energy Gateways, which allow for a decentralized optimization of use via predictive methods are also of great importance.

With regard to the growing grid requirements within the deregulated energy market, experts at Fraunhofer offer market players TÜV-proven (German organization for technical safety and certification) and comprehensive IT solutions for power usage and accounting grid management. At grid level, the institutes realize field trials on real grids for their national and international partners, which can be complemented by simulations. Energy management systems use the collected data to control different generators, storages and loads within the grid.

Virtual power plants are used for an integrated operational management of decentralized energy sources. These power plants aggregate many decentralized generators, storages and loads to one flexible power plant which sells the generated energy at the best price. During these processes, we closely collaborate with energy suppliers who pursue innovative business models.

Due to the high level of complexity, the rapid and precise condition assessment of networked infrastructures is more important than ever and will gain further importance in the future. New methods, which are based on linear algorithms, ensure faster and more precise results than conventional algorithms for a minimum investment.

The Fraunhofer Energy Alliance also offers trainings on the topic “Digitization of the energy world”.

Energy Data Management

The portfolio of the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance in the field of energy data management ranges from energy monitoring systems and the collection of mobile measurement data to consumption analyses along the distribution chain and forecasts. The overarching goal is to optimize energy data management from various points of view: There is potential for improving energy efficiency in many areas - on a small scale (e.g. battery storage) as well as on a large scale (e.g. Smart Cities). Our member institutes are also developing tools for demand and potential analysis, which, for example, allow the structural optimization of storage facilities in regional energy systems. A special focus lies in the field of energy data management of wind power, e.g. in broad-based monitoring programs or the development of standards for the collection of data in wind power plants.

Innovative energy management systems are needed in the most diverse areas. The Fraunhofer Energy Alliance creates concepts and applications for energy management systems in areas such as smart grid technologies, system integration of storage facilities and combined heat and power. The decentralized generation of energy is also becoming increasingly important, so that here too our member institutes are developing innovative energy management systems as central interfaces for local networking. At the interface between the energy management system and the user, Fraunhofer Energy Alliance uses frameworks to create solutions for user-oriented communication of energy data, for example with the help of special apps.

Demand-Side Management / Demand-Response

With regard to the grid-compatible design of the operation and the heating and cooling supply, new requirements will arise in future due to the growing share of renewable energies. On the one hand, fluctuating renewable energies cause fluctuations in power production over time. Added to this is the increase in decentralized energy supply, which increases the demands on the stability of the power grids. The demand-side management approach is used to balance differences between power supply and demand. Among other things, our member institutes are testing new, practical management strategies for the heating and cooling supply of new and existing buildings. In electrical grids with a village structure, Fraunhofer researchers are working on the realization of an automatic management of consumers and producers. In addition, a holistic system approach is being developed as a multi-sector solution for a model city, thus promoting decentralized energy production by means of new business models and incentive systems.

Load Management in Industry

The aim of load management is to influence demand, i.e. the grid load, by specifically reducing power consumption. Load management is also playing an increasingly important role in industry, as the growing share of renewable energies is leading to fluctuations in the electricity grid. For example, member institutes of the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance are developing flexible power monitoring systems that integrate voltage and current measurement and thus simplify installation. In addition, researchers of the Fraunhofer Energy Alliance have developed a method to model the local energy balancing needs of the entire Federal Republic of Germany in order to reveal imbalances in energy distribution.

Cyber Security for Energy and Water Supply

The increasing digitalization of energy and water infrastructures increases vulnerability to cyber attacks, while attackers have access to increasingly powerful tools and methods. At the same time, the dependency on automated processes and IT systems continues to increase. As a result of this threat situation, the legislator has made extensive changes to the law which particularly affect utilities and which may result in them falling into the category of critical infrastructures. In addition to the technical components, employees must also be trained accordingly, as these currently represent the most frequently exploited vulnerability of cyber attacks.
