Power-to-Gas: Methanation of CO2 in Micro-Structured Reactors

Fraunhofer IMM

Focus: Fuel processing

Fraunhofer IMM has successfully developed a carbon dioxide methanation process using its micro-structured reactor technology. The IMM methanation process operates a highly efficient heat management system, leading to high conversion and selectivity. This feature also allows for dynamic operation, an essential prerequisite for the conversion of residual electricity into e-fuels. As a fundamental part of a power-to-gas system, IMM methanation technology can supply renewable methane ready for injection into existing natural gas grids.

IMM's methanation technology stands out due to:

  • Stable, highly selective catalysts also resistant to the presence of sulphur-based compounds
  • Outstanding heat management system for the control of the methanation reaction
  • Simple modularisation for subsequent coupling with electrolysers and gas storage units to set up PtG systems

The scale of Fraunhofer IMM methanation process can be adjusted according to the feedstock availability. This technology is ideal for the utilisation of carbon dioxide from biogas plants for biomethane production.
