Nitrate salts are used as a liquid heat transfer fluid, storage medium or as a phase change material in solar thermal power plants and high-temperature storage systems. They enable operating temperatures above the range of conventional media such as water and thermal oil. For the salt mixture shown here (60% NaN03/ 40% KNO3), the application range is 280-560 °C. The melting point is 221 °C.
